Playing for Dancers redux

I did the World Dance Festival show in Cambridge, MA today with Kathy Hassinger’s Dance Currents group. The only piece the group performed was “Songbird and Soldiers,” which is based on my recordings of “Winter Sun at Nobska”, “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” and “Peppermint Life.” It was a good performance.
It was remarkable how connected I felt to the dancers–even more than the last time I performed these pieces with them. It’s pretty intense to see somebody else acting out the story of the music you’re playing–not just moving in time to it, but giving it a specific form that carries a specific meaning that unfolds over time.Â
