Video of the Day 2 April 2017: Will Pound solo
We’ve featured Irish traditionalist Will Pound on this site before. We came upon this performance recorded at Aberdeen’s Button Boxes & Moothie Festival in November 2015 recently, and we like it for a few reasons, not least that there are damn few harmonica players in the world who can sustain a solo performance like this.
Will’s virtuosity extends to just about every aspect of his playing–there’s plenty of variety in textures and tones, and plenty of breath control in those long, rapid, clearly articulated lines. His preferred material is traditional Irish music, and he approaches that material in ways that no harmonica player I’ve heard has done, breaking new ground in technique and voicings while clearly remaining within the boundaries of the style.
I think Will Pound is one of the most consistently exciting harmonica players in the world right now.
