Why I love "So You Think You Can Dance"

I’m not particularly into dance. I don’t go to a lot of recitals. But I am really into “So You Think You Can Dance.” The thing I love about it is the absolute respect with which the young artists on this show are treated–even the ones who are obviously not Grade A. It is SO different from the contempt with which the singers, even the good ones, are treated on “American Idol”. The judges on “Dance” never, ever treat the aspirations of the contestants with contempt, even when they make it plain that the dancing is not good enough.Â
I think it’s about love for the art, and respect for anyone who commits to it, regardless of their level of achievement. The judges and the contestants, no matter how skillful, are united in their love for dance. It’s that love that informs the treatment of all involved. And I love it.
